Early Elementary Mechanical Skills
Young learners build confidence through an integrated mix of knots, measurement, safety, tinkering, and hands-on construction. Projects such as a model table, decked boat, birdsmouth coopered cup, keepsake box, and inlaid compass rose give purpose to the technical skills, while shorter creative challenges sustain curiosity and balance the concentration required by longer builds.
Elementary Mechanical Skills
Students deepen their knot, measurement, and technical foundations through more demanding micro and macro work. A two-signature hand-stitched journal, handmade paper, quill-and-ink box, trap racer, and half-lap hinged box develop planning, patience, craftsmanship, and problem-solving. Tinkering provides room to experiment and a creative reset between careful precision work and longer projects.
Industrial Arts
Students connect precise measurement and practical knots with focused studies in folding, containers, closures, hinges, structures, motion, assembly, and packaging. Building an analog clock, laminated cheese boards, and an articulating lamp develops craftsmanship, design judgment, persistence, and increasingly independent decision-making.
Drone Design and Python Programming
Students bring engineering, fabrication, and coding together by designing, assembling, and testing a working drone. Technical drawings, electrical measurement, Python, sensors, LiDAR, camera integration, payload systems, balance testing, and mission planning help students understand how individual skills and components become a complete flight system.

Every registration directly supports our 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the young people we serve. Our youth employees help design, manufacture, pack, and ship the materials and supplies, and every staff member earns a living wage aligned with their work. How is the course structured?
The program is a ten-month course running August through May and is divided into two five-month semesters. Each monthly lesson sequence includes four connected parts: knotwork, measurement, a short micro project, and a larger macro project that brings the month’s skills together.
What does the program include?
Monthly project materials and supplies, guided instructional videos, short pre-recorded lessons, independent project work, and scheduled live check-ins are included.
How will we access the online classes?
Hands On Deck uses a custom learning management system (LMS) to house the complete curriculum. Families can access instructional videos, lesson plans, scheduled live meetings, project resources, and more through the Hands On Deck at Home platform.
When will materials ship and when can we begin?
After enrollment, we confirm the current shipping schedule and provide access instructions for the online learning platform. Families joining after the original course opening receive guidance on the best place to begin.
How much time should students plan for coursework?
Time requirements vary by age, course, and project. Families should plan regular work periods for online lessons, skill practice, and hands-on construction. Larger projects may require additional time as students move through more detailed steps.
Is the coursework self-paced?
Students can arrange course work around their family’s schedule while following the month-by-month course sequence. Staying reasonably current helps students benefit from scheduled live check-ins, meetings, and connected skill development.
How do scheduled live check-ins and online meetings work?
Meeting and participation information is provided through the online course platform. Scheduled sessions offer guidance, answer questions, and give students opportunities to share progress.
Can we enroll after the course has started?
Yes, when space and course materials are available. Contact us if you would like confirmation of the current shipping schedule and the best starting point for your student.
Will we receive shipping confirmation or tracking?
Shipping updates and available tracking information will be sent using the contact information provided during enrollment.
What should we do if materials are missing or damaged?
Contact Hands on Deck at Home promptly with the student’s name, course, and a description of the affected item. We will review the issue and help resolve it so the student can continue working.
Is Drone Design and Python Programming available to all grades?
Drone Design and Python Programming is available to high school students only at this time.
What does the ten-month program cost?
Tuition is $90 a month for every student from August through May: ten monthly payments totaling $900.
If I pay in full, can I receive a discount?
Not at this time. As a small nonprofit program, we keep tuition consistent for every student while covering the materials, instruction, shipping, and support required to deliver the course.
